Jerry Yan
Mathematics Major and Computer Science Major
Woodsworth College
Jerry Yan鈥檚 journey into computer science was not a linear path.
The undergraduate began his U of T studies in life sciences, but gradually developed an interest in deductive reasoning.
As he started to explore computer science coursework, he enjoyed the topics he was learning about, which inspired a change in his academic direction.
He admits the transition into computer science was a challenging experience due to the competitive grades required for admission into the Computer Science program of study (POSt) but is grateful for the support he had.
鈥淗owever, I was very lucky to have great friends in both CS and life sciences willing to support me and help me catch up, which helped me a great deal in getting into CS POSt,鈥 Yan shares.
As a CS undergrad, Yan says he enjoyed studying game theory.
鈥淚t was a great pleasure to study this beautiful subject under Professor , Professor Lacra Pavel and Professor . I also enjoyed stochastics under Professor Wenlong Mou under the 海角视频 of Statistical Sciences.鈥
After graduation, Yan is headed off to MIT to pursue a professional master鈥檚 program where he plans to focus on further topics in game theory. Ultimately, he hopes to work at the intersection of tech and business, with an eye toward a role in operations research in the entertainment media or pharmaceutical industries.
As he reflects on his five years at U of T, Yan shares one of the most important things he鈥檚 learned is not to be afraid to take action.
鈥淓ven if you are on the wrong path, you could still get something out of it. Frankly, I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 possible for someone to know exactly what they want to do from the beginning. So, just identify your goals, and go for it!鈥
