The BMO Lab for Creative Research in the Arts, Performance, Emerging Technologies and AI will stage high-profile events, explore new ways for the arts to embrace cutting-edge technology and train the next generation of tech-savvy leaders

Associate Professor Raquel Urtasun envisions the city becoming a world leader in AI thanks in large part to the research and talent at U of T.

Professor Brendan Frey revealed Deep Genomics’ cutting-edge AI drug discovery platform has identified a genetic mutation linked to Wilson disease and honed in on a molecule that holds treatment potential. Also Assistant Professor Periklis Andritsos and Adjunct Professor Helen Kontozopoulos announced that AI-powered customer analytics platform ODAIA has raised $1.6 million in seed funding.

Researchers and entrepreneurs from the University of Toronto are set to showcase their innovative work to a global audience during Elevate 2019, Canada’s largest technology and innovation festival. Professor Brendan Frey, Associate Professor Raquel Urtasun and Adjunct Professor Helen Kontozopoulos are scheduled to give a talk.

Geoffrey Hinton, University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, chief scientific adviser at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and a vice-president and engineering fellow at Google, has been awarded the distinguished 2019 Honda Prize for his pioneering work in the field of deep learning in artificial intelligence (AI) and for his contributions to applying that technology to the broader world.

To illustrate the mutually beneficial relationship between university and city, President Gertler recounted how Associate Professor Raquel Urtasun, a world renowned expert in machine perception and artificial intelligence, persuaded Uber to open a self-driving vehicle research lab in Toronto.

The startup Structura received support from UTEST and the ������Ƶ of Computer Science Innovation Lab, or DCSIL, and is benefitting from being based at the nexus of the Toronto’s burgeoning innovation ecosystem.

Craig is honoured to receive the award. "It’s satisfying to have my work recognized," she says.

Work at U of T is already demonstrating how advances in machine learning can accelerate gains in health, education, communication and quality of life, as well as the importance of educating students to think about the ethics of the technology.

"What I like to tell my students is: Computer science is really the study of how you go from being just the user of technology to creators of technology," says award recipient David Liu, an assistant professor, teaching stream.

Nick Frosst, a researcher at Google Brain in downtown Toronto, didn’t require a master’s degree or PhD to launch a career in artificial intelligence research – all he needed was a chance meeting at a bar in Koreatown.
